Dewey Memorial Hall
Dewey Memorial Hall was erected in 1887 as a memorial to the Reverend Dr. Orville Dewey, a nationally known Unitarian minister born in Sheffield , 1794. His Problems of Human Destiny has been termed “one of the ablest works of the American Intellect.” The building was erected from local stone in 1887 for the use of the Friendly Union, an organization evolved by Dr. Dewey “to increase good and kindly feeling, and promote intelligence and cheerfulness.” The organization has continued without interruption since 1871.
