The Old Stone Store
A noteworthy structure, indeed, its original use was a general store built by the Ensign family from locally quarried stone in 1836.
They advertised ,
Dry Goods, Groceries and Hard-ware at the New Stone Store, where our wares
would be sold very low and all kinds of produce would be taken in payment.
At the same time, Miss M. Rood having just returned from New York with the LATEST FASHIONS, would be happy to see the ladies at her room over the store of E. F. and R. Ensign
In 1901 a disastrous fire damaged the building and it was reconstructed in the architectural style of that period and the colossal Greek Revival columns that supported an overhanging roof were removed. It was purchased by The Sheffield Historical Society in 1999 gutted and renovated and is used for changing exhibits and a gift shop.
